What is hysterectomy?

Hysterectomy is a surgery to remove the uterus . Your doctor may also remove one or both ovaries and Fallopian tubes .In some cases ,we may remove other parts of reproductive system.

Types of hysterectomy:
  • Total hysterectomy
  • Removal of whole uterus including the cervix but not Fallopian tubes or ovaries
  • Hysterectomy with salpingo - oophorectomy
  • Removal of one or both ovaries and the Fallopian tubes along with the uterus and cervix.
  • Radical hysterectomy
  • Removal of uterus ,cervix ,and the top part of the vagina .The pelvic lymph nodes may also be removed.Some cases of cancer call for this surgery .
  • Supracervical hysterectomy( partial or subtotal hysterectomy )
  • Removal of body of the uterus while leaving the cervix completely .
Will I need a hysterectomy?

These are indications for hysterectomy

  • A.Fibroid - A non cancerous mass from the uterus is termed fibroid
  • B.Endometriosis - A condition in which endometrial cells grow outside the uterus. This causes chronic abdominal pain ,pain during sex, Prolonged or excessive bleeding.
  • C.Cancer - Cervical Cancer. Ovarian cancer, Endometrial Cancer
  • D.dysfunctional uterine bleeding,In case of failed medical management E.Pelvic inflammatory disease.

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus. Depending on the type of hysterectomy, other pelvic organs or tissues also may be removed. It is usually performed by a gynaecologist.

Total Abdominal Hysterectomy

This is the most common type of hysterectomy. During a total abdominal hysterectomy, the doctor removes the uterus, including the cervix. The reasons to treat with total abdominal hysterectomy are Cancer of the ovary(s) and uterus, endometriosis. Total abdominal hysterectomy may also be done in some unusual cases when the patients have severe pelvic pain, after a very thorough evaluation to identify the cause of the pain, and only after attempts at non-surgical treatments.

Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

A laparoscopic hysterectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure to remove the uterus. In this procedure the ovaries will not be removed. A laparoscopic hysterectomy is usually done as an outpatient procedure whereas a traditional hysterectomy usually requires a 2-3 day hospital stay. The recovery period for this laparoscopic procedure is 1-2 weeks, compared with traditional hysterectomy.

Lap Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy

Laparoscope is a viewing tube through which the structure of the abdomen can be seen. Lap Assisted Vaginal Hysterectomy is a procedure using a laparoscope to guide the removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries through the vagina.

Oophorectomy

Oophorectomy is removal of one or both ovaries and the Fallopian tubes along with the uterus and cervix. The surgery is called as ovariectomy.

Ovarian Cystectomy

Ovarian Cystectomy is a surgical excision of an ovarian cyst. Ovarian cysts are small fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries. The common symptoms some women may experience are pressure, swelling, cramp and pain in the abdomen. Most ovarian cyst will resolve in its own without any treatment. But for women who suffer from severe pain are advised to undergo an operation.

Ectopic Surgeries

Ectopic pregnancy is attachment of fertilised eggs other than uterus most often in fallopian tube. It cannot be turned into a normal pregnancy. To remove the eggs in fallopian tube and to avoid the dangerous problems of ectopic pregnancy it is advisable to undergo a surgery.

Myomectomy

Myomectomy, refers to the surgical removal of uterine leiomyomas which is also known as fibroids. These noncancerous growths appear in uterus, but they can occur in any age groups. The main goal of this surgery is to take out the noncancerous growth and reconstruct the uterus.

Lap Cystectomy

Ovarian Cystectomy is a surgical excision of an ovarian cyst. The laprosopic surgery uses small incision and specialised tools. Laprosopic surgery is much better and faster than the open surgery. The recovery time from this surgery is 1 – 2 weeks.

Laparoscopic Sterilisation

Laparoscopic Sterilisation is a procedure used to perform tubal ligation in women. Tubal ligation is a method of sterilization that involves obstruction of the fallopian tubes.

Diagnostic Laparoscopy

Diagnostic Laparoscopy is a surgical procedure that is recommended when other diagnostics tests cannot confirm the cause of the condition in abdomen. Laparoscopy can be used to:

  • Find the cause of pain in abdominal regions
  • Examine a tissue mass
  • Confirm endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Look for blockage of the fallopian tubes
